SUMMARY/SCOPE:

Theprimary job of a Campus Police/Safety Assistant is to provide a safe and secureenvironment for all members of the University community through alert andthorough preventative patrol. In addition, they must be equally concernedwith the courteous delivery of a wide variety of services consistent with theneeds of students, faculty, staff, and general public. To effectivelyaccomplish these purposes, all officers must have a clear understanding oftheir powers, duties, responsibilities, and limitations, and conduct themselvesat all times with courtesy and an attitude of service. The safety officers aresubject to the direction of the Police Sergeant, and the Chief ofPolice. All officers will maintain a professional demeanor wheninteracting with any person on campus. They will complete the necessary initialinvestigations and other reports as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: These examples do not include all possibletasks & do not limit the assignment of related tasks.

Notify the HSUPolice Officer on duty/call or the Abilene Police Department when issuesrelated to the protection of life and property are called in or observed. Mayoccasionally direct and control traffic on university property. Notify HSUpolice or Abilene Police Department to prevent crime or disturbance of peaceand make log entries of such events.

Campus Police/Safety Assistant may also be responsible for the followingduties:

Patrols assigned areas on foot, or in a university provided vehicle. Lock and unlock buildings as required by aprovided schedule. Discover crimes,notify to officer on duty of those crimes, maintain order, and answer calls andcomplaints.

Familiarizesthemselves with beat and with persons living in area.

Initial interviews and questions victims, witnesses, and suspects to ascertainif the police should be notified.

Locates and preserves evidence.

Performs first aid and provides other assistance to accident and other victims.

Directs and controls traffic.

Issues written citations for traffic and other minor violations.

Attends community meetings to discuss crime prevention activities and crimeproblems.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Thisjob has no supervisory responsibilities, except oversight of studentworkers.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES (Language, Mathematical, Reasoning and Computer Skills):

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documentssuch as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and proceduremanuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Abilityto speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, anddivide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, anddecimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw andinterpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY: Abilityto define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions inmathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concretevariables.

COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this jobsuccessfully, an individual should have knowledge of various software programsin Microsoft Office, navigating the internet, use of social media platforms,library automation software, and library electronic databases and serials.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma or GED required. Associate degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical schoolpreferred; or six months to one-year related experience and/or training; orequivalent combination of education and experience.

Must be enthusiastic about working in a team-oriented environment.

Must have excellent interpersonal (Emotional Intelligence)and communication skills; (ability to clearly express ideas and concepts orallyand in writing) as demonstrated in the written competencies required for thisposition.

Strong commitment to the values of diversity and humancompassion required.

Must have demonstrated ability to be self-motivated andautonomous required. This will be validated through the annual review processeach year.

Must have demonstrated understanding of changing studentneeds and ability to articulate these needs to the University communitypreferred.

Experience engaging student crisis and at-risk student needspreferred.

The above requirements will be validated through the writtencompetencies provided by the applicant in addition to the interview process andreference checks regarding past employment experience, etc.

Frequentlywill be required to stand for prolonged periods of time.

Theemployee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently liftand/or move up to 25 - 30 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50pounds.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Full-Time positions require four 10-hour shifts perweek for the 40-hour workweek (10PM - 8AM). Shifts will be scheduled 4 out of 7days a week (Sunday - Saturday).

Part-Time positions require up to 29 hours per week (possiblynight shift).

On-call duty is required when a response is necessary.

Non-Exempt/Hourlyemployees who work beyond 40 hours during a single work week will becompensated at time and a half, per FLSA guidelines.

Infrequenttravel may be required on occasion in order to attend training workshops.

Must have andmaintain a valid Class C Driver's License and maintain a clear driving recordto be insurable under the university liability policy.

Must be able to drive to complete work assignments onand off campus, as needed.
