Job Description

The Dean of the School of Business at McMurry University is responsible for providing strategic leadership, academic oversight, and operational management for the School of Business. The Dean reports directly to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and works collaboratively with faculty, staff, and administration to advance the mission and goals of the university.

Essential Duties Summary

Major/Essential Duties of the Job:

Faculty Hiring, Management, and Assessment

  • Recommend staffing needs and faculty appointments to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
  • Assist in the recruitment, screening, interviewing, and selection of faculty candidates.
  • Review faculty portfolios and make recommendations for tenure, promotion, leave, and pre-tenure review per Faculty Handbook guidelines.
  • Appoint and evaluate department leadership within the School of Business.
  • Approve faculty course loads, including overload assignments.
  • Address and resolve faculty and student concerns, including student grade appeals.
  • Support faculty development and foster an environment that encourages professional growth and innovation.
Program, Asset, and Operational Oversight
  • Lead the budget development process for the School of Business and manage allocated funds effectively.
  • Coordinate, review, and approve class schedules and catalog revisions.
  • Ensure effective program administration and alignment with the university's mission and strategic plan.
Curriculum Development and Oversight
  • Facilitate continuous program assessment and improvement to maintain academic quality and relevance.
  • Encourage the integration of innovative technology and teaching methods into courses.
  • Evaluate and recommend new courses and programs that align with university objectives and market demand.
  • Promote evidence-based rigor and academic excellence in all School of Business programs.
University Leadership and Strategic Vision
  • Serve on university committees, including the Dean's Council, to support institutional initiatives.
  • Collaborate with other deans, academic units, and administrative offices to enhance the student and faculty experience.
  • Work with Institutional Advancement to secure funding and philanthropic support for the school.
  • Represent McMurry University at academic, community, and professional events to promote the institution and recruit students.
  • Engage with advisory boards and external stakeholders to support program growth and development.
  • Lead strategic planning efforts to align the School of Business with the university's broader goals and accreditation standards (e.g., SACSCOC).
  • Encourage and support faculty in securing external grants and research opportunities.
Communication and Advocacy
  • Foster effective communication among faculty, staff, students, and administration.
  • Advocate for the School of Business within the broader university community.
  • Uphold and promote the mission, vision, and values of McMurry University.
Student Engagement
  • Advise students, write letters of recommendation, and participate in student-centered initiatives.
Other Duties
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Vice President for Academic Affairs or the President.
Required Qualifications
  • Masters Degree.
  • Minimum of three years of successful teaching experience in higher education.
  • Demonstrated administrative and leadership experience in an academic setting.
  • Industry Experience
Minimum Required Education
Master's degree

Preferred Qualifications
  • Earned terminal degree (Ph.D., DBA, or equivalent) in a discipline relevant to the School of Business
  • Prior experience as a department chair, associate dean, or similar leadership role.
  • Experience with accreditation processes and academic program assessment.
  • Proven record of scholarship, faculty mentorship, and community engagement.
  • Knowledge of innovative teaching methodologies, including online and hybrid instruction.
